Design

There are a few things you’ll notice about the Acer Spin 5 right out of the box. For starters, the magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis gives the laptop a more classic appearance, giving it a purpose. Acer’s switch to magnesium allows it to lose a significant amount of weight, resulting in a thinner profile. It still has the robust feel of an aluminum chassis, so it feels very sturdy despite being lighter and thinner than previous models. The trackpad and keyboard are adequate. The chicklet keys are responsive, but due to the smaller keyboard’s real estate, they’re a little cramped, so some people used to a larger keyboard may find it difficult to acclimate.

When typing, the trackpad is super-smooth, fast, and provides some minimal feedback. The laptop’s fingerprint sensor is also housed on the trackpad, which is a great security feature that is about as quick to unlock as it gets. The Active Pen stylus bundled with the Spin 5 features Wacom AES 1.0 technology for increased responsiveness and precision, as well as 4,096 pressure levels.

It was difficult not to notice the massive letterboxes slapped onto the top and bottom of a 16:9 film during our HD movie test.

Unfortunately, this makes the video you’re watching look considerably smaller than it already does on the 13.5-inch screen. The image was amazing in and of itself, but it was difficult to properly enjoy it because it was sandwiched between two big black bars.

Hardware

The Acer Spin 5 is a well-made small laptop with a 360-degree hinge that allows the screen to fold back and provides all of the advantages of a tablet, including full stylus capability.The Acer Spin 5 is equipped with Intel’s latest 8th generation CPUs, which provide long battery life (more on that later) and excellent graphics performance.

Overall, the battery life was good, and I was able to get around 7 hours of regular use utilizing the Spin 5 for ordinary web browsing, email, and even viewing a movie. When playing a processor-intensive game or watching a video at full brightness, the laptop’s battery life drops to about 4 hours. The bundled 45W power source takes about 2 hours to fully charge the Spin 5; there is no rapid charging option.

The Acer Spin 5 also has a 2,256 x 1,504 IPS display and a 360-degree hinge, allowing it to transform from a typical laptop to something as similar to a physical notebook as possible. As a result, this 2-in-1 laptop is quite adaptable.

While you won’t be able to play games or conduct graphically demanding or CPU-intensive chores on the Acer Spin 5, it’s still a capable machine. It is one of the finest laptops for students due to its excellent performance, adaptable form factor, and stunning display. The Spin 5’s touchscreen display, which has a 3:2 aspect ratio, is ideal for taking notes with the stylus.
