Design and Build:
The new HP Omen 15 features an updated design. It’s more mature than previous generations – the old machine was dominated by a huge single-hinge display, a base covered with RGB LEDs, and sparse angled caps. This new model is different: the dark gray anodized aluminum used throughout is sleek and smooth, and the vents are unobtrusive.
There’s still a bold design here, but it works well: the large speaker grille uses attractive geometric patterns, and the new Omen logo on the lid is a luminous iridescent diamond. There are three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and a 10GB / s Type C connection, supporting DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 3, and charging. There is also mini Display Port and HDMI output, SD card reader and Gigabit Ethernet socket. It’s easy to get in and both the memory slots and the SSD can be used.
There is a 720p webcam, but Windows Hello is not supported. Omen 15 does not have a fingerprint reader, nor does it support the 20GB/s connection of USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. These features are not important to the game, but if you want a dual-purpose machine, they may have an impact on your work tasks. Sadly, the build quality is not very good-the material between the hinges is flexible and the corners of the screen feel weak. The base is better, but the area on both sides of the trackpad is noisy. Protective sleeves are not a bad idea.
This laptop is also not thin: it weighs 2.45 kg, and the thickness is close to 30 mm with rubber feet, so the appearance may be deceptive. Competitors in certain sectors are better. The Dell G5 Gaming 5500 weighs 2.34kg and is 25mm thick, while the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 weighs 1.6kg and the body is 18mm thick. The build quality is impressive.
Keyboard and touchpad:
HP makes the most of available space when planning keyboard layout. The buttons stretch from side to side, with little space on both sides. The arrow keys are placed separately and are not combined with other functions. There is a group for Standard Insert, Home, Page Up, etc. in the. There are also dedicated keys for the Omen Gaming Hub and calculators.
The power button is located next to the F12 key to make it consistent with the rest of the appearance. The review unit provides a customizable RGB perkey through the Omen software, but if not, you can choose four RGB areas or the standard white backlight is really separated from the increased lighting. The Fn key is available out of the box and will highlight the first two rows of keys when pressed; a small function like this is a nice touch. Generally speaking, writing is good. The keys are small and the spacing is wider than I am used to.
As someone who uses Ctrl to squat in the game, the small size makes me press the Fn key most of the time. However, I can still type at a speed close to what I usually have. Eliminating ghosts can help improve game performance, but please note that this is not a keyboard designed specifically for games with special switches. HP once again made full use of the space of the Precision touchpad on the laptop. It is large enough to increase productivity and can be tracked without error. There is no rattle or gap when clicking, I think it is on the same level as some high-end ultra-books.
Now, let’s talk about the core of the laptop and how it works when playing games. As part of the review, we tested Wolfenstein II: New Colossus, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Far Cry New Dawn, and GTA V. We did not change the performance-related system settings during the test to ensure an immediate experience. Users can use the “OMEN Command Center” to switch the speed of the system fan in the “Thermal Control” section. After clicking the “OMEN 15” item in the sidebar of the application, you can find it in the “Performance Monitoring” tab. Here, the system default setting is “AUTO”.
The Omen 15 lasted for 6 hours and 13 minutes in the Laptop Mag Battery Test, including continuous internet access over 150 nits of Wi-Fi. This is actually very good for gaming laptops and helped it outperform the Strix G15 (5:11), but not the 8:47 average of mainstream gaming laptops. However, thanks to AMD, we’ve seen an era of gaming laptops never seen before, including the incredible 7:14 of the G5 15 and the incredible 11:09 of the Nitro 5.
