Design and Construction
Elite Book devices always feature great workmanship. And this unity is not exclusion. Made almost entirely of aluminum, it is fairly sturdy when it comes to structural integrity. The dimensions are 1.67 kg and the profile is 19.2 mm. Since the device is a variation of the touch screen, you should expect it to be a bit bulkier and heavier than a non-touch screen. In addition, the surface of the laptop is matte. That is, few fingerprints are attracted to the surface. It is also certain that the lid can be opened with one hand.
This year, there are many slim bezels on the top and bottom, the latter with an IR facial recognition system. Then there is a good keyboard assembly. It has a numeric keypad, two-level backlight, long key travel, and click feedback. You can also see that there is a nipple on the touchpad that comes with its own set of buttons. By the way, it was a bit strange that we couldn’t get them to work, but that could be a one-time issue for our unit.
By the way, HP seems to use the same terrible power button arrangement on most of the 2020 devices, as the Elite Book 850 G7 is the latest model to be tampered with in this way. In addition, the notebook has a glass touchpad with excellent tracking and glide, and a fingerprint reader on the right side of the base. The base also has Bang & Olufsen speakers and NFC coil locations. In this way, only the ventilation grill remains in the lower area and the hot air between the lid and the base escapes from the device. This is another design change as the laptop used to use side-mounted exhaust.
Disassembly, Upgrade Options, and Maintenance
This is one of the easiest notebooks to get. All you have to do is loosen the five Phillips screws and pry the bottom plate from behind with a plastic tool. The cooling solution includes two heat pipes that cool both the CPU and GPU. The heat is then dissipated through the heat spreader and a large enough fan. You must remove the metal bracket to access the RAM. Fortunately, HP has added a pull tab that makes it very easy to remove the bracket. Below that are two RAMSO DIMM slots that support a total of up to 64GB of DDR4 memory. When it comes to storage, there is only one M.2 PCIe x4 slot. And when it comes to batteries, HP gave the notebook a 56Wh unit.
PWM (Screen Flickering)
Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control the brightness of your monitor. Decreasing the brightness does not reduce the intensity of the background light, but it is turned on and off by the electronics at frequencies that are indistinguishable to the human eye. These light pulses change the time ratio of light to non-light without changing the brightness, which is harmful to the eyes. For more on this, see our special article on PWM. The screen of the HP Elite Book 850 G7 does not flicker at any brightness level. Fortunately, this allows you to play for longer periods of time without further damage to your eyes or brain.
