Design and build:

If you read my previous review of r4, you will know that I am very satisfied with the overall build quality. I wish I could say that this is the case with r5, but unfortunately, I can’t. The truth is, it’s not that good. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s far from scary, it’s actually pretty good. But after experiencing the r4 and owning a previous Alien ware laptop, I think this r5 does not reach the level of quality I expected. Let me explain. In some of my operations, I noticed some creaking noises on the body.

Especially when raising and lowering the lid, I feel the frame and hinge squeak a little bit each time. Also, every now and then I hear a squeak when I pick it up from the corner when it’s open. Finally, there is a point on the front edge just below the touchpad, and I can bend it just by pressing it with my fingers, creating a click. As mentioned above, this is not what I expected. After solves these little problems, the rest of the build is pretty good.

Build Quality:

The entire laptop is made of magnesium alloy (it’s safe at this point), and the aesthetic design is very similar to the r4.I like the black that Dell chose. I blame the bezel because if I squeeze it together with the cap and slide my fingers through it, it makes noise and feels a bit cheap.is especially true at the bottom of the frame. Just press my finger on it and I feel like they forgot to use adhesive or something. Under the lid is a very standard keyboard layout with a small touchpad. More on those later. Above the keyboard are some passive input grilles and the power button in the upper right corner.

Ports:

This power button lights up and changes color according to the battery status. This display will be described in more detail later. It is surrounded by a thin plastic frame. The thin borders on the top and sides, but there is still enough space for a suitable webcam, which also supports Windows Hello. The bottom of the bezel is significantly thicker, and there is an Alien ware logo near the center. For IO, starting from the left, we have a headphone/microphone jack and an Ethernet port. The only one pair of USBA ports on the right side. Is not much, because the rest is on the trailing edge? There you will see a power outlet, an HDMI port, another USBA port, and a USBC port.is like that, there are many gaps between them.

This is a good amount of IO, but compared to the previous review, it is very disappointing to see it lacking. They are obviously making the m15 cheaper and saving additional IO for their Alien ware x series models. But if you look at those laptops, * all * IO is out of date, which is strange to me.is not all: the power socket is in the left corner and the headphone jack is in the right corner (also very strange).After looking at the x series, I think this I / O layout is better. What was missing before was the Alien ware graphics amplifier.

Graphics Card:

Actually, Dell interprets this as no because the benefits of placing the 3000 series graphics card in the chassis are limited. I will believe them, but I think a lot of people will get mad about it, especially if they have bought an amp recently. Also missing are the SD card reader, Mini DP port, and additional USBA port on the left. Is a bit bad. The leading edge is very smooth, which is also different from r4. What the lacks is the 4-way speaker cutout on this model. Instead, they chose a downward-facing speaker, which is a strange move if you ask me.

There is nothing special at the bottom. The many vents, and the feet are high enough to let air in. The brand’s honeycomb design is very unique and makes it look great in my opinion. Alien ware’s favorite design. If you must, I can bear it, but at the price you pay, I think this is an unfair argument. However, there are several functions on this 55 that are much better than r4. I will use these functions and not only make up for the design and construction changes. So don’t be frightened.

Input device:

Input device has not changed, but no problem. The default Chiclet keyboard with 1.7mm key travel is very comfortable and quiet. You can set 4 zone lighting quite broadly. The mechanical keyboard that we have reviewed in the m15 R4 also has an option (100 euros). It provides clearer feedback and per-key lighting, but the sound is also much louder. The size of the touchpad does not meet modern standards, 10.5 x 6 cm, but the cursor movement works fine, only the click sound is a bit loud. However, in any case, you may use an external mouse during the game session, so this shouldn’t be a big deal.
